Designing the Secret World
Inside Your Phone
I was hired by Sony Imageworks to create entirely new magical worlds based on apps, programs, and myriad inventive takes on everyday phone technology.
MODERN CULTURE THEMES
The design solution I created for Sony was colorful, glowing, and translucent . The main challenges were finding a way to simplify a complex visual structure and creating the right balance between tech like UI and popular, everyday emojis.
REAL WORLD & DIGITAL WORLD
For the motion design, I used a 2.5D approach and was able to automate and reuse key elements with the dedicated 2.5D tools I developed, all while maintaining the visual language.
Consistency is King
A HAND CRAFTED ADVENTURE
In the space of six months, three leading ladies have taken the spotlight: Jaina Proudmoore, the Alliance mage who will act as the final boss of the upcoming Battle of Dazar’Alor raid dungeon; Sylvanas, the undead Warchief of the Horde; and Queen Azshara, leader of the serpentine naga and big-bad-in-the-shadows. Each got her own Warbringers short this summer leading up to the launch of the expansion. These are definitely not your girl-next-door storylines either.
Another aspect of the design was finding a way to make it realistic but stylized, using richer and more detailed textures but pushing the proportions and simplicity in the shapes, as well as keeping a graphic look that made them more appealing.
A SURREAL WORLD OF CUTE PUPPIES
As the initial design was very busy (Minority Report like), I decided to throw half of the elements out and reset the visual hierarchy by re-introducing more iconic shapes, which would a clear read of the UI annotations. Adding micro interactions helped map out the hierarchy of the focal points.
