BABY STEPS INTO ANIMATION

The style chosen for the origin stories used line drawing extensively, like those employed in the creation of concept art. The images captured the correct tone for an origin piece and stood apart from other storylines with full 3D imagery.

STORY

HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO

Each of the Overwatch characters has a rich story. The creative challenge was showing that story in a short and economical way composed entirely of illustrations, usually with voice-over narration. The goal was telling a story in one minute to set the mood of the character, explore their past, and establish their personality.

A HAND CRAFTED ADVENTURE

In the space of six months, three leading ladies have taken the spotlight: Jaina Proudmoore, the Alliance mage who will act as the final boss of the upcoming Battle of Dazar’Alor raid dungeon; Sylvanas, the undead Warchief of the Horde; and Queen Azshara, leader of the serpentine naga and big-bad-in-the-shadows. Each got her own Warbringers short this summer leading up to the launch of the expansion. These are definitely not your girl-next-door storylines either.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING

Another challenge was revealing historical events that established the game content and shaped the mood of the sequence. A rich visual language was created, and the art sang through comic book references with minimal usage of resources and bandwidth.
